Who doesn’t love a surprise? I had two surprises this week. One was fun as my brother chose to bring my son to visit. We had no idea he was coming and all of a sudden he was at the door! We had a fun time in the afternoon and had dinner together.

The other surprise wasn’t quite as fun to receive, but God has this one too! Just because something is not “desired” doesn’t mean God isn’t in it!

There were surprises in the Bible. Many events occurred that were not expected, and sometimes not desired! The wonderful Promises that we can hold onto from all of them is that God is in control of ALL things. The situations in the Bible bring us HOPE that God is our strength in everything.

In Exodus 4 Moses had elements of surprise when God had him change the staff into a serpent and his hand became covered in leprosy. God was showing Moses HIS strength and doing His best to bring Moses to a place of believing in HIS greatness that would be shown through Moses. Moses questioned it. God still used him.

In Joshua 8-10 Joshua and the Children of Israel were in a place of “defeat” (or so they thought). God told them not to despair or feel defeat and gave Joshua commands to obey. God delivered them.

Joshua 10:9 Having spent the entire night marching up from Gilgal, Y’hoshua fell upon them, taking them by surprise.

The story of Ruth has the element of surprise for Boaz when he wakes and finds Ruth at his feet.

Ruth 3:8 In the middle of the night the man was startled and turned over, and — there was a woman lying at his feet!

Without this “surprise” and ultimate union in marriage King David would not have been born. Jesus comes from the lineage of David.

Friends, we are living in days and hours that will be filled with surprises. More and more people are desperate and will do anything to try and “find happiness.” More and more people will become angry with their circumstances and carry out acts that will harm those around them. These “surprises” are not out of God’s site. He knows what is happening and when we TRUST Him completely He will walk with us through each situation.

We also know that the time for Christ’s return is drawing near. The element of surprise is all around us!

Luke 21:34 “But keep watch on yourselves, or your hearts will become dulled by carousing, drunkenness and the worries of everyday living, and that Day will be sprung upon you suddenly like a trap!

God wants us to be READY and PREPARED! What does that look like for you? What will it take to bring yourself into that place of PEACE in the storm? Are you continually “surprised” by what is happening around you? Or, are you relying on His strength to bring you through? Do you walk in HIS comfort, ready to face ALL things He brings your way?

If you are faced with surprises this week, take them to HIM. Give Him THANKS and PRAISE for the good ones. Lay those that are not what you desired at HIS feet and let Him work in the circumstances to bring you through. Let HIM deliver you!

He is in control my friends. He created the world. He created YOU. Wrestle with Him… Let HIM be your source of peace in the surprises He brings your way.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rose Horton
