Yetzer HaTov vs. Yetzer Hara
What in the …..????
I am studying Romans in my new Complete Jewish Study Bible.
Today while studying Romans in verses 7:8-9 the commentary talked about the Yetzer HaTov and the Yetzer Hara – which means Good and Evil inclinations.
Here is a simple definition /explanation from Google ….
In Talmud and Midrash: Doctrine of man. …impulse, personified by two angels, yetzer ha-ṭov (the good inclination) and yetzer ha-raʿ (the evil inclination), which enter each man after birth. It is the duty of man to overcome his evil inclination, and it is for this that he is rewarded.
When you look up the verse in the Message translation it helps to show that without the Torah ( law) God’s word – sin and evil inclinations can abound … but with Torah and God good inclinations will override the evil.

Don’t you remember how it was? I do, perfectly well. The law code started out as an excellent piece of work. What happened, though, was that sin found a way to pervert the command into a temptation, making a piece of “forbidden fruit” out of it. The law code, instead of being used to guide me, was used to seduce me. Without all the paraphernalia of the law code, sin looked pretty dull and lifeless, and I went along without paying much attention to it. But once sin got its hands on the law code and decked itself out in all that finery, I was fooled, and fell for it. The very command that was supposed to guide me into life was cleverly used to trip me up, throwing me headlong. So sin was plenty alive, and I was stone dead. But the law code itself is God’s good and common sense, each command sane and holy counsel.-Romans 7:8 MSG
So they, in that time and still today, some are tripping people up in what is good and what is evil …. but right at the end here it’s states “The Law Code” which is the Torah … which is the law of God as revealed to Moses and recorded in the first five books of the Hebrew scriptures (the Pentateuch); is itself God’s good and common sense – sane and holy counsel.
So, this leads me to absolutely believe and confirm that when we are in God’s word, following His sane and holy counsel, we will follow our Yetzer HaTov – Good inclinations, which is the result of God’s transforming work in our lives through Messiah Yeshua!
So, Apple or Donut – that’s a simple choice but not always a clear showing which is the evil or good inclination … a simple donut isn’t evil – but a whole dozen just might be…
I wish every Yetzer HaTov and Yetzer Hara was this simple or basic …. don’t you?

Some other takeaways today on righteousness – right standing with God …
Romans 5:6-8 …
Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

Righteousness comes from trusting God!
Romans 10:4 …
The earlier revelation was intended simply to get us ready for the Messiah, who then puts everything right for those who trust him to do it. Moses wrote that anyone who insists on using the law code to live right before God soon discovers it’s not so easy—every detail of life regulated by fine print! But trusting God to shape the right living in us is a different story—no precarious climb up to heaven to recruit the Messiah, no dangerous descent into hell to rescue the Messiah. So what exactly was Moses saying? The word that saves is right here, as near as the tongue in your mouth, as close as the heart in your chest. It’s the word of faith that welcomes God to go to work and set things right for us. This is the core of our preaching. Say the welcoming word to God—“Jesus is my Master”—embracing, body and soul, God’s work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead. That’s it. You’re not “doing” anything; you’re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That’s salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: “God has set everything right between him and me!”

Jesus the Messiah offers righteousness to everyone who trusts Him!
The Messiah was sent by God not merely for the righteous, but also for rebellious undeserving individuals.
Did you catch that? 👆🏻
Even when rebellious and undeserving …in our evil inclinations… God sent the Messiah to us along with His Torah – His Law and His Word and His Amazing Spirit …to help us live in righteousness.
His promises are sure!
Psalm 103:3-5…
He forgives your sins—every one. He heals your diseases—every one. He redeems you from hell—saves your life! He crowns you with love and mercy—a paradise crown. He wraps you in goodness—beauty eternal. He renews your youth—you’re always young in his presence.
