I receive emails from The Passion Translation. The one I received today spoke about “following your dreams.”

It is the New Year. It is a time to evaluate for many people. This year is different than many years because of Covid. The “pandemic” has changed everyone’s life. Dreams should be important. I believe God wants us to dream. He wants us to have dreams at night while we sleep. He wants us to listen to Him and follow His dream for our lives. There are lots of verses about dreams.

Numbers 12:6 he said, “Listen to my words: “When there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams.

Joel 2:28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

Ecclesiastes 5:7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.

We know that in the New Testament Joseph had a dream to take Mary as his wife. We know that they experienced visions in the New Testament as well. We know MANY people in the Old Testament had dreams. Daniel and Joseph were given the gift to interpret them for the kings and leaders. The verses above show us that dreams and visions will happen in the “last days.”

Dreams can take so many different meanings. I know I have had some that have “layers” to them. There could be several different ways of “interpreting it.” If that is the case, than how does one know what is “really truth?” I’ve told two people the same dream and gotten two interpretations. Scenarios such as these tend to make me cautious. I do believe we need to be careful when we rely on only dreams and visions, or “Words from the Lord.”

It is quite clear that Ecclesiastes gives a warning about dreams and Words. I found that verse interesting because so often if we have a dream, or are “dreaming big” for a certain event or plan to take place, we get so excited. Someone gives us a “Word of knowledge” and we run with it, BEFORE it is time. I know that when I have a dream I often want to know immediately what it means. If I feel like God wants me to do something, I want it to happen NOW.

More and more I am seeing that sometimes God has us wait. Sometimes the dream is NOT for now. Sometimes the dream needs to be walked out step by step. Sometimes we place too much emphasis on dreams and we miss Him and the timing He wants for the plan.

Think about Joseph and the dream he had about others bowing down to him. That dream came to pass YEARS later. We are living in different times and the return of Christ is quicker than we probably want to admit, but God still wants us to work in HIS time and on HIS timetable.

In these last days we must be on guard. I am sensing more and more that we must be cautious about whom we believe and what we believe. There is so much propaganda out there trying to trip us up and trick us. We get so caught up in “hearing from the Lord” or receiving a “Word from the Lord” that we actually miss Him.

Remember how Elijah heard God…

I Kings 19:11-13 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

God was in the whisper. God was in the quiet moment. We often want Him to be in the BIG powerful places, but God often is found in the lowly, quiet places.

As you begin 2021, remember that you must DREAM BIG, but pace yourself and go with HIS timing. Don’t get ahead of what HE needs you to do. Day by day and step by step…

Shabbat Shalom,

Rose Horton
