Leviticus 6:13 – Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out.
This verse grabs my heart. It has honestly been a verse that I have meditated upon for months now, trying to squeeze out every bit of glorious revelation that I can.
Looking at this scripture, I feel like some would see this as a strict commandment. And although I know that it’s something the Lord does want for us; I have come to see it as an INVITATION more than a rule or a law. It’s an invitation into greater levels of INTIMACY and FIRE like we have never known.
I asked the Holy Spirit a few weeks ago how to keep the fire burning – how to not allow it to go out. And His response shook me. He said, “You BURN OUT when you RUN OUT of OIL…stay oily, and you will keep burning for Me!”
To stay oily, we need HIS oil. And thanks be to Jesus, it’s OURS, in full, because of our inheritance in Him. We can come boldly to Him, and stay in His presence, where we find every ounce of oil that we need.
Although oil in the Bible tends to represent some sort of special anointing, I believe that the OIL the Lord mentioned to me here stands for so much more! According to the Collins Dictionary, as a variable noun, oil is a thick liquid that is used as fuel and for making parts of machinery move smoothly. Oil is found underground.
Sometimes, you have to dig deep into INTIMACY to find the oil that makes your heart continue to burn. Often, oil is the thing that makes your time with Him smooth and keeps you from “grinding” in the natural.
As a verb, the Collins Dictionary states that oil, when put onto something, keeps things protected. Your life, your calling, and your FIRE is protected when you keep it oiled in the Spirit. And INTIMACY is the way to stay oiled.
Also, as a variable noun, oil is used for cooking and used to soothe skin and often has a pleasant smell. When I think of cooking, immediately I think of seasoning (I’m from South Louisiana, so the two go together). As Christians, you and I are called to be the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13), and too much salt makes one thirsty. Praise Jesus, we are called to make people THIRSTY for JESUS, the LIVING WATER (John 4:14; John 7:38).
Likewise, we carry Jesus, who is the HEALING BALM (Jeremiah 8:22) and we are His sweet aroma to the world (2 Corinthians 2:15).
Have you ever shared a small space with someone wearing strong perfume? You walk away smelling like them. We need to stay in a small space with Him to keep His aroma strong.
Another noun that represents oil is in oil PAINTS. As ones who have been restored to the image of our Father, the Great Creator, we have the amazing ability to COLOR THE WORLD around us with His love. And that love can only be found, refilled and remembered while in the SECRET PLACE with Him.
Everything we do goes back to INTIMACY.
So, in essence – as hard as it is to understand it – in order to stay burning for Him, we must stay burning for Him. We must daily drench ourselves in the oil of His presence, His love and His grace. The fire CAN and SHALL be kept burning continuously as we allow Him to burn continuously in and through us. To burn, we must STAY OILY. And to stay oily, we must BURN. It’s actually who we are in Him, and what we were created for.
