Spring Cleaning

I’m writing this on Sunday and Passover has not yet begun. You will be reading this on Friday, which is the middle of Passover. It isn’t too late to clean!

We are in a time of rest, but it is also a time of cleaning. I guess we could call it “spring cleaning!”

Every year before Passover Jewish households clean from top to bottom. They put away dishes and cutlery that has been used for “every day” and they pull out their Passover Kosher cookware and dinnerware. They clean their cupboards of all leaven. It is a time of “getting rid of” and “purifying.” If I must be honest, I believe this is where the idea of spring cleaning originated. I believe that some of this happens too legalistically and is taken to extremes, however, there is much for us to consider and ponder on. Cleaning keeps our bodies healthy. Houses that have too much dust can cause health issues. Refrigerators that are not kept clean get moldy food. The list could go on…

During this Passover season of 2020 we are cooped up inside. Many are cleaning in a literal physical sense. Closets, cupboards… People have extra time so they are purging what is not needed. Our family did this in a recent move. I’m sure there is more that could/should be thrown out, but we had a good start.

There is also a connection to spiritual cleansing.

I Corinthians 5:7-8 “Get rid of the old hametz, so that you can be a new batch of dough, because in reality you are unleavened. For our Pesach lamb, the Messiah, has been sacrificed. So let us celebrate the Seder not with leftover hametz, the hametz of wickedness and evil, but with the matzah of purity and truth.” -1 Corinthians (1 Co) 5:7-8 CJB

“Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” –1 Corinthians 5:7-8 ESV

We are told to clean out and purify ourselves. Get rid of the “old leaven.” Most of us understand that leaven is a representation of sin. If there is something sinful inside of us, in our homes, in our minds; we are to get rid of it.

During this time of quarantine, we should take time to cleanse our minds. We should take the time to renew our minds and reflect on the things in His Word. It is okay to listen to teachers of the Word, but we need to read it ourselves. There is so much He wants to teach us if we just take the time to stop.

As you remain “quarantined,” take time to cleanse your mind, will and emotions. Wash them with HIS Words and let HIS Truth take your fleshly thoughts captive.

YOU are an overcomer. YOU are a child of the Most High God. YOU are chosen for such a time as this and YOU are a LIGHT to those you meet.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Semach Pesach!

PS If you want to participate in a Passover meal, we have a book available on Amazon that details how to put one together. It truly is a blessing and every year I grasp a new and deeper insight into all that our Messiah has done for us.
