Jesus said, “Unless a seed of grain falls to the ground and dies, it abides by itself alone. But, if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life will lose it, but he who hates his life in this world will keep it unto eternal life.” – John 12:24,25. This is one of the essential keys to the kingdom. We know that God wants us to live fruitful lives glorifying to him, but often the pathway is dimly lit. The “how to” of bearing fruit is often obscured by the lure of the city lights.
So, to be clear, we have a daily choice: build up our own reputation and kingdom or invest ourselves in his reputation and kingdom. If we choose him, the reward is eternal life – “You shall know the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom he has sent.” – John 17:3. It is the dying to self part that is hard. This world beckons and calls for us to come and play. We are easily enticed. The “prince of the power of the air” knows how to present earthly enticements so that the downside is all but obscured. He never comes right out and declares that the price of fleshly living is eternal death.
However, Our Father always presents his case openly and honestly. The rewards are clearly presented and the punishment for disobedience to the Gospel message is also clearly laid out. No one will be able to claim ignorance at the final judgment. “Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.” – Philippians 2:10,11. So, willingly or unwillingly, every soul will eventually acknowledge that God’s way is right. It is our prerogative to hold out as long as possible, but, in the end, God will be glorified. It is only our final destination that is in question. It is in our best interest to bow our knees and confess Jesus as Lord now. Remember the key: “He who loves his life will lose it, but he who hates his life in this world will keep it unto eternal life.”
