Barely Alive

On that elevator

I meet everyone

Alive

Barely….

Walkers walking…

With walkers

Tennis balls gliding

Them closer to

Their destination

You can smell oldness

Feel their loss in the hallway

I try to cheer them

Lighten the load

You can’t carry anybody elses burden

Burdens have to be cast away

Cast off

@%&# off!!!!

I feel the despair

Wanting to slap them

Out of their silence

Screaming Shut Up and LIVE

Dear God

Get a Grip

B4

You

Fall and can’t get

Up

And

Kick the Dust

With your

Good old leg.

The Close Proximity Of Promise

He was magnificent!
He did not see himself
The way she saw him
He had no idea
Her love for him…
He only saw
What she wasn’t
What she would
Never be
How ironic
How malicious
How many people
Live in the close proximity
Of promise
Never
Entering in
That sweet land
Of milk and honey
Where it is easy
To see
Everything
Perfectly

Open Books

A book without a binding cover is just a collection of pages which can fall out or be blown away by any strong wind.

You have heard it said you can know a person like an ‘open book’.

We are just like books when Jesus saves us…

He steps into our life and binds us together, He not only binds the past chapters of our life, but also secures the future unread chapters.

Not only that, He protects us with a beautiful covering and makes our life story complete.

He smoothes and guilds our sharp and rough edges with fine gold, He also embossed a name on us that is unique and describes our purpose.

He attaches a fine ribbon to mark our place in our story, so we never lose our place or way again.

He also makes a space for us where we perfectly fit, a shelf of rest where we lean on like minded others for support and we stand upright knowing He owns us.

But He never leaves us long before He picks us up once again, opens us up and spends time studying our life’s pages.

As His eye’s scan every word and every letter, He rejoices when our pages speak testimony of what God has done in us and for us.

He holds us in His strong hands and when He has placed us in His chest pocket, close to His heart, He walks with us.
What type of book are we?

We are living Bibles, the Word of God alive in us.

When you invite Jesus into your heart and life, your story is just beginning…

Pick And Choose

Have you ever been teaching your children a life lesson and BAM! right there in the middle of the lesson you get a prompt in your spirit and the Lord speaks to your heart? Almost like a big clearing of the throat “Uhmm Hmmm” sound to get your attention and a then a loud “HELLO, I have been trying to teach you the same thing!” I have had many of those moments! I love when God teaches me something this way because I seem to get it more clearly and it sticks deeper with me.

Recently, I have been frustrated with my teenagers when I ask them to do some things and I later come back to find out they did not do them. They pick and choose what they will obey. They are small things, like asking them to put away the dishes, and two hours later they are still not done. Or: I ask them to clean their rooms and the next day their rooms look as though the hurricane switched course and came back around for another sweep of destruction. Or: the trash man is barreling down the road and I glance to the road to find the trash cans which I had asked them to take to the road are nowhere in sight.

These are all little things and sometimes not of any big significance, but I like to explain to my kiddos that it is all a big deal, because it shows when they obey the command and not treat it as a suggestion, they are honoring the authority of their parents and building integrity. Sometimes, when I remind them and ask if they have unpacked their backpacks, or made sure they have that homework project finished, they brush me off and snap back “We Know, We Got It”…I then say to them “This is a command not a suggestion, we don’t pick and choose what we do and don’t do” hundreds of times like a broken record and then there it was. God interrupted me with his loud throat clearing sound and the loud “HELLO, Michelle!”

How many times do we read or know God’s commands and we pick and choose or treat them as a suggestion?

Just to simplify:

Command=Order given by one in authority.

Suggest=mention or introduce for consideration or possible action.

There is a huge difference in these two definitions. Of course, it did not take me long to immediately think of God’s lists of commands in the Ten Commandments, (given to Moses on Mount Sinai and listed in Exodus 20 & Deuteronomy 5…)

God’s Ten Commandments:

1. Do not worship other gods.

2. Do not worship idols.

3. Do not misuse God’s name.

4. Keep the Sabbath holy.

5. Honor your father & mother.

6. Do not murder.

7. Do not commit adultery.

8. Do not steal.

9. Do not lie.

10. Do not covet.

We all know them. We might even think we are safe because we haven’t done or don’t do the “Really Big Ones” anymore. Some may even think the Bible is outdated and not relevant to today so they are not really commands, just mere suggestions, on how to be a good person. Again, we pick and choose instead of obeying them all. But if you live by a Biblical worldview and are a believer in Jesus Christ, His love letter to us, The Bible, is very much still relevant today and His word is not a mere suggestion, it is a command to follow and obey.

Thankfully, God is a gracious, forgiving and merciful God. He will not strike you down for breaking these. That is where repentance comes in and that is between you and God. If you ask Him for forgiveness of your sin, He will not turn you away, but instead receive you with grace. That is a Life Lesson for another post. Today, let’s take each commandment apart, one by one shall we?

Do not worship other gods

There are lots of gods with a small “g”. There are the gods of job, food, drugs, alcohol, people, approval, fame, money. But we know there is only One big “G” God – The Lord Almighty. We are to worship only Him.

Because you must not worship any god except for Me. My name is Jealous, and I am a jealous God.~ Exodus 34:14
 Do not worship idols

Anything that takes more importance or our attention than we give to God is an idol.

You are not to make any idol or image of other gods. In fact, you are not to make an image of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. ~ Exodus 20:4
Do not misuse God’s name

Many may think of the obvious one. I call it the GD word and it is very offensive to me. I do not like to hear it at all. It has always been an “ear sore” to me. But did you know saying “Dear God”, “Oh Lord”, “Oh My God”, “Jesus Christ”, or “Jesus”, as a slang word or frustration or in any other way than calling on or speaking of the Lord in reverence is misusing God’s name?

You are not to use My name for your own idle purposes, for the Eternal will punish anyone who treats His name as anything less than sacred. ~ Exodus 20:7
Keep The Sabbath Holy

Self-explanatory

The Sabbath was made for the needs of human beings, and not the other way around. ~Mark 2:27

You and your family are to remember the Sabbath Day; set it apart, and keep it holy.~ Exodus 20:8

Honor your father & mother

Honor-To hold in respect; esteem

You are to honor your father and mother. If you do, you and your children will live long and well in the land the Eternal your God has promised to give you.~ Exodus 20:12

 Do not murder

Self-explanatory, but did you know that to hate another is also equal to murder?

You must not murder ~Exodus 20:13

Everyone who hates other members of God’s family is a murderer… ~ 1 John 3:15

Do not commit adultery

Adultery-Consensual sexual intercourse between a married person and a person other than the spouse. To even look after another person with lust is committing adultery.

You must not commit adultery.~ Exodus 20:14

You may think you have abided by this Commandment, walked the straight and narrow, but I tell you this: any man who looks at a woman/man with lust has already committed adultery in his/her heart.~ Matthew 5:28

Do not steal

If it is not yours; don’t take it.

You must not steal.~Exodus 20:15

If you have been stealing, stop. Thieves must go to work like everyone else and work honestly with their hands so that they can share with anyone who has a need. ~ Ephesians 4:28

 Do not lie

Anything other than the whole truth is still a lie

Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.~Exodus 20:16

Hidden things will always come out into the open. Secret things will come to light and be exposed. ~ Luke 8:17

Take note, there are six things the Eternal hates; no, make it seven He abhors:

17 Eyes that look down on others, a tongue that can’t be trusted,

    hands that shed innocent blood,

18 A heart that conceives evil plans,

    feet that sprint toward evil,

19 A false witness who breathes out lies,

and anyone who stirs up trouble among the faithful.

~Proverbs 6:16-19
 Do not covet

To want or desire what someone else has.

You are not to covet what your neighbor has or set your heart on getting his house, his wife, his male or female servants, his ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.~ Exodus 20:17

Although these are just the main commandments, the Bible is full of so many more…What we need to remember and trust is that God’s commands are all full of His love and for our ultimate good – just as we teach our children. Let us be sure that we are not picking and choosing between them and treating God’s commands as mere suggestions or options. May we all learn to hear that loving “Uhmm Hmmm” – sound from our Heavenly Father and be quick to obey.

My son, do not ignore the Eternal’s instruction or lose heart when He steps in to correct you; Because the Eternal proves His love by caring enough to discipline you, just as a father does his child, his pride and joy. ~ Proverbs 3:11-12

But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations. ~Exodus 20:6

Empathy

Define

Empathy can be defined as the capacity to understand what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference in other words place yourself in another’s shoes.

Affirm

Matthew 22:39 “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Recall

On the evening of Monday, May 25, 2015 heavy rain was followed by a wide-spread life threatening flood that exceeded the flooding we had experienced during Hurricane Ike. That morning, I awoke to many texts questioning my safety and texts stating “stay home.” I had no idea what my family members suggested; until I pulled outside of my parking lot to see the bayou over flowing with water. I quickly returned home and turned on the news that morning to see many communities in Houston underwater. A few days later, we learned the subsequent flooding event impacted thousands of businesses and homes, damaged hundreds of vehicles, caused power outages for more than 100,000 residents, and led to nine local fatalities.

Two weeks after the flood I met a woman at a work event—on a Saturday. The organization I work for partnered with a local company that offered free mattresses to families who experienced the devastation. Because it was the weekend, I didn’t have a sitter so my daughter, Lereine went with me. I really didn’t want to work on Saturday; especially with the sun beaming on me like I was a rotisserie chicken; but of course I obliged considering the partnership was valued at more than 1.5 million.

I saw a women in line by Lereine- of course she was entertaining the crowd. In an attempt to engage in conversation with her, I noticed she was wearing a shirt that stated “Rice University,” so I politely said “did you attend Rice?” I was not ready for her response. She said no, “I didn’t. Actually, I lost all of my clothes in the flood and a neighbor let me have this shirt.” Initially, I did not know how to respond. The only SILENT response was empathy.

All of a sudden my entire reason for being there became clear. Early that week, honestly I was frustrated because my team was required to work long-extremely long hours. As I began to imagine what Carley’s family endured- I had to stop being concerned about how great of a job I was doing or how long my work hours were. Instead of complaining, I started thanking and praying. My family could have been the family needing help instead of offering the help. God again humbled me.

Have you found yourself inadvertently complaining instead of thanking? Have you found yourself not empathizing with another person; because your struggle was not their struggle? Just know, GOD instructs us to have empathy and he wants us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

The next time you see someone experience pain, heartache, and/or turmoil- I challenge you to for a minute try to imagine what life would be like if you too endured their situation and then ask GOD to bless them. When you do, you will feel amazing, and so will they!

Exercise

Dear God,

Thank you for helping me understand the importance of empathizing with others. For at moments, when I choose to lack empathy, please soften my heart to show love to my neighbor as myself.

Commit to the challenge. I DARE you.

Stop Juggling It All

Recently I was quietly reflecting and began to think about the words “My Portion”.

Portion:

a part of any whole, either separated from or integrated with it.

“My Portion” those parts I try to carry or juggle sometimes is not always the portion God has for me. His portion is perfect and and is always better than my portion.

I definitely would prefer to be integrated with instead of separated from…

I am not a very good juggler!

I am learning to yield when God is showing me which of “My portions” I need to release. Which ball I should let go of….

You know, those things that we just choose to take ownership of or control of without seeking Him and His plans first.

It becomes so much that it is like too many balls being tossed up at once and there is no way to juggle them all…. It leaves us feeling like well…the image above-laid out flat on our face with all the balls gathered around us on the floor.

As I was hearing Him speak to my heart about Portion and Juggling….I also got the word “Enough”.

Enough:

adequate for the want or need; sufficient for the purpose or to satisfy desire.

Adequate, sufficient, satisfy….

Sometimes do you feel like you are inadequate? Insufficient? And far from satisfied? Do you feel like what you are doing is not ever “Enough”? That it all just seems to fall short no matter how you slice it? That you have way too many balls juggling?
Of course we all feel that way sometimes, but

That is the enemy-and that is a big ole lie!

The first thing to do is- stop juggling!

Second, check your “Peace Gauge”.

If we are feeling separated, short, stressed, loaded down and ill equipped without any peace, that is our indication our peace gauge is on Empty- and we have gotten out of God’s Will.

It’s time to fill up with Christ!

Strangely to fill up with more of Christ, our peace, we have to learn to release and surrender those balls ( or our portions) back to Him.

Christ is in us so We Are “Enough” and We Have “Enough” Always! We will always have peace if we are in His will, carrying only His portion

I then started thinking of the lyrics to this great song and that is when it came together for me- you know that “AhA” moment. Not Oprah’s AhA. No, my AhA version is a much brighter and bigger Light than a simple lightbulb moment.

“my AhA” is “A Holy Answer” from God…..

When we allow God to be our portion, follow His direction and get in rhythm with the Holy Spirit,(stop juggling it all) and taking on our own “portions” and instead seek His portion as My Portion it will always be “Enough” because God is always Enough. His Portion is perfect! He is All we need.

Fall in love again with this classic song as you too think about…

is “My Portion” His Portion? and is He “Enough” for me?

The Beach

What is it about the beach that causes one to be so relaxed and fresh minded. Since all of my not so old life that I can remember I feel more at home sitting on the beach or a near a body of water.

I used to tease that I must have been a mermaid or dolphin in another life. But since I know that I was created by an awesome Creator who designed me to like what I like and be what I am.

Which in not a mermaid or dolphin.

I continue to draw near to the water and sun every chance I get.

I know the truth.

The truth is:

God created us from the dust of the earth.
Genesis 2:7

“Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
There must be something to many of us feeling so at home near where we came from. Yes, I have been called a tree hugger, granola girl and hippie at times.

I’m really just a lover of nature and all things connected with it.

I do eat meat!!😜
BTW, trees tell us stories with their rings found in their stumps and could tell us some whoppers if they could speak.

Stop and look at a tree. I dare you to ask it a story!!
I love the earth that God created. Just when I think I have seen the most beautiful thing, I am amazed at another scene before me with backdrops of His majesty.

Right now it just happens to be a creative canvas of turquoise ocean and white sand.

Wake up and smell the flowers!!!
Check out Isaiah 60.

I couldn’t stop at verse 2 because it has so much more insight for those who want to go deeper.

Isaiah 60

The Glory of Zion

60 “Arise, shine, for your light has come,

and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

2 See, darkness covers the earth

and thick darkness is over the peoples,

but the Lord rises upon you

and his glory appears over you.

3 Nations will come to your light,

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

4 “Lift up your eyes and look about you:

   All assemble and come to you;

your sons come from afar,

and your daughters are carried on the hip.

5 Then you will look and be radiant,

   your heart will throb and swell with joy;

the wealth on the seas will be brought to you,

to you the riches of the nations will come.

6 Herds of camels will cover your land,

young camels of Midian and Ephah.

And all from Sheba will come,

   bearing gold and incense

and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.

7 All Kedar’s flocks will be gathered to you,

   the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;

they will be accepted as offerings on my altar,

and I will adorn my glorious temple.

8 “Who are these that fly along like clouds,

   like doves to their nests?

9 Surely the islands look to me;

in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,[a]

bringing your children from afar,

   with their silver and gold,

to the honor of the Lord your God,

   the Holy One of Israel,

for he has endowed you with splendor.

10 “Foreigners will rebuild your walls,

and their kings will serve you.

Though in anger I struck you,

in favor I will show you compassion.

11 Your gates will always stand open,

they will never be shut, day or night,

so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations—

their kings led in triumphal procession.

12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish;

   it will be utterly ruined.

13 “The glory of Lebanon will come to you,

the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,

to adorn my sanctuary;

and I will glorify the place for my feet.

14 The children of your oppressors will come bowing before you;

all who despise you will bow down at your feet

and will call you the City of the Lord,

Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Although you have been forsaken and hated,

   with no one traveling through,

I will make you the everlasting pride

and the joy of all generations.

16 You will drink the milk of nations

and be nursed at royal breasts.

Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior,

your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,

and silver in place of iron.

Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,

and iron in place of stones.

I will make peace your governor

   and well-being your ruler.

18 No longer will violence be heard in your land,

nor ruin or destruction within your borders,

but you will call your walls Salvation

   and your gates Praise.

19 The sun will no more be your light by day,

nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,

for the Lord will be your everlasting light,

and your God will be your glory.

20 Your sun will never set again,

   and your moon will wane no more;

the Lord will be your everlasting light,

and your days of sorrow will end.

21 Then all your people will be righteous

and they will possess the land forever.
Our Creator loves us so much He gave us all the wonderful places to visit and soak in His light and allow His glory to appear over us.

How He Loves Lyrics

He is jealous for me, loves like a hurricane, I am a tree

Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy

When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions

Eclipsed by glory and I realize just how beautiful You are

And how great Your affections are for me

And oh, how He loves us, oh

Oh, how He loves us, how He loves us all

He is jealous for me, loves like a hurricane, I am a tree

Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy

When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions

Eclipsed by glory and I realize just how beautiful You are

And how great Your affections are for me

I hope you all get a chance this summer to go and just sit to be amazed at His creation. Let Him speak to you through the breezes, rain falling, leaves whistling, waves breaking or just your backyard birds chirping.

A New Drug

I hear the old Huey Lewis song – “I want a new drug” swirling around in my head today. I had to YouTube the song just to remember it. Although Lewis sings of a new drug to make him feel like he feels with a new love interest without any negative side effects; I started to think of Christ as a new drug.

Christ is a new drug for some people and sadly for many the last resort, or even worse many don’t even know Him as The Great Physician.

It is true, healing is in His Very Name!
Jehovah – Rapha -The LORD who heals.

Another awesome benefit is there are no negative side effects in Christ.

My friend Reverend Phillip Hand with Vision House Ministries in the UK, has a great ministry. We have featured him before on the blog and you can search by his name to see more posts.
One part of his website is a section to put in your name and download or print personalize healing Bible scriptures just for you to declare over yourself or for someone else. Your own personalized RX for healing!

So maybe you have not tried Jesus, you can accept Him right now into your heart. (See prayer below) Maybe you know Him but not sure if He can heal you and as the last resort are willing to try anything, or maybe you know Him as your Great Physician and want to do it for yourself or someone else – wherever you are, give Jesus a try and declare yourself healed in Jesus name.

Don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior? Accept Him now:

Pray this prayer….

Dear God I come to You in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins.

I believe that Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins.

You said in Your Holy Word, Romans 10:9; that if we confess the Lord as our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved.

Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved.

Thank you Jesus for your unlimited grace which has saved me from my sins. I thank you Jesus that your grace always leads to repentance. Lord Jesus transform my life so that I may bring glory and honor to you alone and not to myself.

Thank you Jesus for dying for me and giving me eternal life. Amen.

Perfect Peace

John 14:27 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

We all say that we want peace, but we still allow so much chaos to enter our lives. How many times have we watched so much drama and foolishness on television and then began to mirror what we had just watched on television? Or how many times have we listened to our girlfriends stories about their lives and we instantly take on an attitude into our own family life? Life throws us all a curve ball daily, but that’s why God’s Word is in place to protect us and to keep us in perfect peace.
Here are examples of what we may experience on a day to day basis in our families:
1) Kids not listening or not doing chores as they have been asked
2) Running late for work or for school
3)Just don’t feel your best today
4)Can’t find the right clothes to wear
5)Who used the last of the milk or in our house it’s who left the milk out

All of these things can make a day start out a little crazy but PEACE is what God has promised us throughout the Bible. So trust God and his word and He will give you PEACE.

Scripture:

Philippians 4:7 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Promise of PEACE (poem)

I will let God’s peace infuse every part of today. As the chaos swirls and life’s demands pull at me on all sides, I will breathe in God’s peace that surpasses all understanding. He has promised that He would set within me a peace too deeply planted to be affected by unexpected or exhausting demands. God has not promised sun without rain, joy with sorrow, peace without pain. But God has promised strength for the day, rest for the labor, light for the way, grace for the trials help from above, unfailing sympathy, undying love. ~By Annie Johnson Flint
