The Essentials of Divine Nature

His divine power has given us everything we need to experience life and to reflect God’s true nature through the knowledge of the One who called us by His glory and virtue. 4 Through these things, we have received God’s great and valuable promises, so we might escape the corruption of worldly desires and share in the divine nature.

God took the first step to rescue us from this corrupt world. He has granted us His power, revealed to us true knowledge, and spoken to us great promises. He has done all this for a reason: that we might participate in His own nature and reflect His own life. But we are not passive observers of God’s saving actions. We must receive His grace, grow in knowledge, and join Him in this work of redemption.

5 To achieve this, you will need to add virtue to your faith, and then knowledge to your virtue; 6 to knowledge, add discipline; to discipline, add endurance; to endurance, add godliness; 7 to godliness, add affection for others as sisters and brothers; and to affection, at last, add love. 8 For if you possess these traits and multiply them, then you will never be ineffective or unproductive in your relationship with our Lord Jesus the Anointed; 9 but if you don’t have these qualities, then you will be nearsighted and blind, forgetting that your past sins have been washed away. 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, work that much harder to confirm that God has called you and claimed you. If you do this, then you will never fall along the way; 11 and you can be sure that you will be richly welcomed into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Anointed, our Liberating King. ~2 Peter 1:3-11The Voice (VOICE)

As I read this verse I kept thinking of building blocks as each quality was listed.

Building blocks :a unit of construction or composition; something essential on which a larger entity is based.

“Something essential on which a larger entity is based”

So it had me thinking, for me to come up higher and to be more like the Divine Nature of Christ I need to build and develop these essentials.
These Building Blocks are what will help me to escape the corruption of worldly desires and develop my Divine Nature.

So why should we build on these to our faith? Why add these qualities?

vs 4- Through these things, we have received God’s great and valuable promises, so we might escape the corruption of worldly desires and share in the divine nature.

the Voice translations commentary states:

“But we are not passive observers of God’s saving actions. We must receive His grace, grow in knowledge, and join Him In this work of redemption.”

re·demp·tion\ri-ˈdem(p)-shən\
noun
the act of making something better or more acceptable.
Christianity : the act of saving people from sin and evil : the fact of being saved from sin or evil.

We can’t be effective in saving people from sin and evil without them.

Thankfully each quality we are to add and build upon to help us join Him in this work of redemption and also to develop us in His Divine Nature are listed:

Faith-complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

Virtue-behavior showing high moral standards.

Knowledge-facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

Discipline-the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior.

Endurance-the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way.

Godliness-conforming to the laws and wishes of God; devout; pious. Coming from God, Divine.

Affection-fond attachment, devotion, or love: the emotional realm of love.

Love -a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.

And so by obtaining and building on these traits, what will happen?

vs 8 – For if you possess these traits and multiply them, then you will never be ineffective or unproductive in your relationship with our Lord Jesus the Anointed;

And if we don’t –

vs 9 – but if you don’t have these qualities, then you will be nearsighted and blind, forgetting that your past sins have been washed away.

Lastly, why do this?

vs 10 – Therefore, brothers and sisters, work that much harder to confirm that God has called you and claimed you. If you do this, then you will never fall along the way;

The biggest reason for this:
vs 11 – and you can be sure that you will be richly welcomed into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Anointed, our Liberating King.

Wow – what a promise!

This verse for me is still one that I am meditating on and unpacking so I would love to hear your thoughts on this too.
